Tropical Fruit Trees
About the Avocado Fruit Tree
If thinking to plant an Avocado Fruit Tree, remember that location is an important feature to look at. This tree is a tropical plant, so it tolerates very little cold. Even so, as they do not have bark to protect themselves from the intense sun, you need to plant it under shade.
They are originally from south-central Mexico. If you want it to bear fruit, you need to be patient, and wait for at least four years after planting it.
Care & Planting Instructions
Prune
They do not necessarily need to be pruned. But when you need to control their spread or height, prune them. If you prune them, do it before flower set and flush of new growth.
Watering
You need to water this tree on a grass schedule during the spring, summer and fall. They need to dry out a bit between watering.
Sun
They prefer sun, but equally need protection from the western sun during year one. Once they develop a strong deep root structure and dense foliage, they can protect by themselves.
Fertilizer
When the tree is young, we recommend you to not fertilize it for at least the first year. Once established, you can use a balanced citrus fertilizer per year. When fertilizing it, remember that less is more with commercial ones, so be conservative.
